Curator Hamlets Shiraz

  • About the Wine

Hamlets Shiraz (previously known as Parishes Shiraz) is a blend from different sub region or “Hamlets”  where we grow and buy grapes from across the Barossa Valley. Predominantly from our Marananga vineyard front block of Shiraz (two different clones) along with  Shiraz from a 50 year old Vine Vale vineyard. There also is small amounts from Stone Well and Hallet Valley.

Each parcel was picked separately and destemmed into open-top tank for fermentation, chilled down then allowed to warm up then inoculated with yeast to start the ferment. All parcels were fermented separately. The ferment was gently hand plunged two to three times daily for approximately 7-8 days. Then basket pressed and all blocks blended together and filled to tank to complete natural Malolactic fermentation. Once completed the wine was transferred to only seasoned USA & French oak  where it stayed for approximately 12-14 months maturation in barrel.

Hamlets Shiraz is made in a complex but juicy style that is true to our house style but extremely easy to drink though complex enough to be able to cellar for many years of future enjoyment.

92 Points – The Wine Front; Garry Walsh July 2021 –

Formerly known as ‘Parishes’, and now Hamlets, named after small pigs. I like it. Like MB commented on the 2018 release (Parishes, not Hamlets, so less cute), I like the less oak-driven styles from this producer. As per the Sex Education scene in The Meaning of Life – “What’s wrong with a kiss boy?!”

Blackberry, nutty, spice, a little veneer of toasty oak. Juicy dark fruits, a bit of nut and chocolate, sooty tannin, some mint and sage, light chew, and a saline and raspberry infused finish of solid length. Nice wine. Spot on.

93 points – Wine Orbit, Sam Kim MW – It’s fabulously ripe and perfumed on the nose showing Black Doris plum, sweet cherry, vanillin oak and cake spice aromas with a lovely floral overtone. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and plush texture, leading to a gorgeously long delicious finish. At its best: now to 2031. Sept 2021.
